An Australian court has convicted a man of stealing ancient Egyptian artifacts. ABC reported. The theft occurred at the Museum of Art and Archeology in Kabulutera. A stranger used an ax to smash the window and enter the building through it. He stole necklaces, mummy masks, and wooden cat figurines. During the robbery, this man also caused “irreparable” damage to other exhibits. The kidnapper turned out to be a 52-year-old Venezuelan native, Miguel Simon Mungarieta Monsalve. The man explained his actions by saying that he wanted to return the ancient artifacts to his homeland because of “the museum's connection to the Catholic Church.” Judge Deborah Vasta said the case would remind her of “an episode of The Simpsons if the violations weren't so serious. It was noted that the Venezuelan native wrapped the artifacts in his country's flag. According to ABC, Mungarieta Monsalve lived in a van. In addition to theft and damage to the museum, he will also be tried for drug possession and causing bodily harm. Currently, museum staff are working to restore the damaged artifacts. Stolen or damaged due to improper storage and care.
