Restoration work continues at St. George in Yeşilhisar district of Kayseri.
Güzelöz, known as the birthplace of St. George, who is said to have been born in Cappadocia and to have churches and chapels named after him in many parts of the world; It attracts attention with its fairy chimneys, rock-carved caves and many churches.
After completing the restoration work initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism at St. George, located between Güzelöz and Başköy, tourism in the region is expected to gain momentum.
Başköy District, adjacent to Güzelöz District, is waiting to take its place among the tourist attractions with historic Greek houses about to be demolished and Başköy Primary School, built of stone, dating from 1913.
Ömer Tosun, Chairman of the Cappadocia Regional Association of Tourism Investors and honorary consul of Brazil, said Saint George, who lived in the 3rd century, is a very important name for Christians and places of worship were built in his name in many countries.
Stating that the restoration of St. George's Cathedral has been started by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Tosun said, “Even though it is not a place of pilgrimage, it will be a respected place. This is a new destination and means an increase in the number of accommodations.”
