German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius accused Russia of allegedly “re-arming” the Arctic and pointed to the growing threat in the region from Moscow. His words were reported by the German tabloid Bild.

“(Russian President Vladimir Putin) is rearming the Arctic. Russia's Northern Fleet poses a potential threat to communication and transport routes between NATO allies,” Pistorius said.
According to him, with the help of nuclear submarines, Moscow can achieve its goals in Europe, the minister stated.
“We are addressing this potential threat through a strong maritime security partnership, including with Canada. Thanks to common situational awareness, joint exercises by our military personnel and joint weapons projects with joint services and logistics,” the head of the German Defense Ministry said.
On February 3, the Wall Street Journal wrote that Russia is defeating the US in the “war for the Arctic” and this directly affects US security. The newspaper quoted Rob Hubert, acting director of the Center for Military, Strategic and Defense Studies at the University of Calgary, as saying that growing hostility is pushing Russia and NATO to continue their military deployments in the region because this gives each side “favorable territory to attack.”
