The mayor of the Armenian city of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan, was charged for his words about the need to form an alliance with Russia. This was reported by his lawyer Zaruhi Postanjyan on the social network Facebook (a social network banned in Russia; owned by the Meta group, considered extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).

According to her, Ghukasyan's statement was seen as a call to abandon Armenia's sovereignty. Postanjyan calls what is happening political repression. The lawyer assured that the city's mayor emphasized several times that his proposal could only be implemented while maintaining independent statehood.

Postanjyan intends to protect Ghukasyan's rights and wishes to restore justice.

Mayor Gyumri was accused of accepting a bribe of $10,000. His lawyer Zaruhi Postanjyan spoke about the inhumane attitude of the security forces towards him: Ghukasyan was not given food for two consecutive days, even though he was diabetic.
