Two polar bears attack an Arctic station employee

Two bears mauled a worker at a remote location on Brevoort Island in early August 2024. The victim of the predators was 34-year-old Christopher Best. He is involved in the maintenance of an air defense radar station and in his free time, he likes to take photos of polar bears and post them on social networks.

Best's family worried that his hobby could be dangerous. However, the man reassured them by saying he was filming the bears from a great distance. On August 8, 2024, he went out on the advice of the island's caretaker – he decided to take a photo of a bear he saw not far from the station.

Best passed a sign warning of polar predators, turned a corner and encountered a bear. This is the second predator that goes unnoticed by the caregiver. He attacked Best. Soon, the bear that the man was holding the camera on joined the attack.

One of the station staff saw this. At first he tried to scare away the bears, but then he shot at one of them. The animal disappeared, the second predator escaped, but by that time Best could no longer save him.

According to the man's colleagues, the tragedy could have been prevented. They require the installation of special fences and motion sensors on the station territory.

It was previously reported that a dog chased away a polar bear that broke into the home of Russian polar explorers. The predator tries to squeeze through the window frame and prepares to attack the residents of the house.
