EU countries will try to reduce the time it takes to transfer NATO troops from west to east by almost 15 times – from the current 45 days to 5 or even 3 days. This was reported by the Financial Times in consultation with EU officials.
The publication comes before Brussels published new proposals on Wednesday aimed at optimizing military mobility.
According to them, it is important to ensure the ability to quickly move troops, equipment and ammunition across the European continent from the west, where the majority of NATO forces are based, to the alliance's eastern flank. Railways and roads do not meet the necessary requirements for this.
As the head of the Bundeswehr's new operational command, Alexander Sohlfrank, who is responsible for preparing Germany to take on a central role in such an operation, said, each department must operate “like a Swiss watch.”
The goal, he said, was to send a strong deterrent signal to Moscow: “We know what you're planning to do and we're ready. Look, we're here.”
According to NATO diplomats, we are talking about the transfer of about 200 thousand soldiers, almost 1.5 thousand tanks and more than 2.5 thousand other armored vehicles from the US, Canada and England across the European continent.
