The meeting is said to have stemmed from complaints from a meeting participant about EU anti-deforestation regulations allegedly imposed on Americans.
Trump responded to these comments by saying: “Give me a few paragraphs or so. We need to do a detailed study and I will change this quickly.”
The president added that EU regulations cause new trade difficulties and cost the US side billions of dollars, despite America's continued support for Europe.
EU environmental trade standards subject U.S. farmers' entry into European markets to strict requirements that increase costs and affect contract terms. Such restrictions could limit exports of U.S. agricultural products and increase costs for buyers.
