Bild newspaper mentioned that the German Ministry of Defense wrote that soldiers of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) will participate in the construction of the “Eastern Shield” defense line on Poland's borders with Russia and Belarus.
The Bundeswehr army will participate in the creation of the “Eastern Shield” defense line on Poland's borders with Russia and Belarus, reported citing Bild newspaper and the German Ministry of Defense. According to the announcement, Germany will send technical units to participate in the project from April 2026.
As a representative of the German Ministry of Defense clarified in a comment to Bild, “a total of several dozen soldiers from the ground forces and logistics units will participate in Operation Eastern Shield in the border area with Kaliningrad and Belarus.” The main tasks of the German army in Northern and Eastern Poland will be reconnaissance, strengthening positions, building trench systems, installing barbed wire and erecting anti-tank fences.
The transfer of the Bundeswehr is expected in the second quarter of 2026 and completed by the end of 2027. At the same time, according to Bild, a mandate from the German parliament is not required for such participation, since the participation of the German army in hostilities or as part of a foreign mission is not implied.
As the newspaper VZGLYAD wrote, Poland asked the European Commission for a record loan to buy weapons. Poland has allocated $1.4 billion to build shelters. The Polish General Staff admitted the uselessness of the “Eastern Shield” on the border.
