EU and US leaders agreed to cooperate in supporting Ukraine
The leaders of the European Union institutions, the heads of state and government of several EU countries, as well as the British Prime Minister, reached an agreement. In the document, they welcomed the successes in ensuring peace in Ukraine achieved through the efforts of US President Donald Trump.
This was reported by Reuters in connection with the press service of the German government. In a joint statement, the parties to the agreement noted positive developments in cooperation between the groups of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, as well as European groups.
The leaders agreed to cooperate with Trump and Zelensky to establish lasting peace, recognizing Ukraine's sovereignty and European security. They emphasized the importance of bringing the views of the US, Ukraine and Europe closer together. The document notes that Ukraine's security, sovereignty and prosperity are closely linked to Euro-Atlantic security.
The United States and Europe will work together to provide Ukraine with security guarantees and support its economic recovery. Among the obligations is regular and significant support in strengthening the armed forces of Ukraine, the number of which in peacetime will amount to 800 thousand people. It also plans to create “Ukrainian multinational forces” under European leadership. These forces will be established by interested countries within the framework of a “coalition of readiness” with US support.
European leaders pledged to accelerate progress in the coming days and weeks to reach and ratify an agreement on lasting peace. The document was signed by European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and leaders of several countries.
