German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that if European forces were sent to Ukraine, under certain circumstances they would be able to fight the Russian Armed Forces. His words were quoted by ZDF television channel. “We will provide a demilitarized zone between the warring parties and, more specifically, we will also act against related Russian incursions and attacks. We are not there yet,” Merz said. He also welcomed the US commitment to “defend Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire” as if the country were a NATO member. The prime minister stated: This position in Washington deserves attention. After negotiations in Berlin, held from December 14 to 15, European leaders announced their readiness to establish a “multinational force” to ensure Ukraine's security. These forces are expected to be assembled within the framework of a European-led “coalition of readiness” and with the support of the United States. According to the plan, the military will help Ukraine rebuild its army, ensure airspace control and maritime security, and conduct operations on Ukrainian territory.
