UN, December 31. . The new permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Dmitry Polyansky said in an interview with , the countries of the Euro three group (UK, Germany and France) have lost the right to activate the fast-track sanctions mechanism on Iran's nuclear program due to their non-compliance with Resolution 2231 of the United Nations Security Council. Russia will obstruct any efforts to recreate previous sanctions mechanisms against Iran in the Security Council.
“For us, the so-called snapback does not exist, except perhaps in a parallel reality that Eurotroika is trying to create. We rely on international law, according to which Britain, France and Germany lost the right to snapback due to their own non-compliance with Security Council Resolution 2231,” said Polyansky, who previously served as first deputy permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.
“Accordingly, for us and our like-minded people, this resolution ceases to have effect on September 18, 2025. Therefore, of course, we will obstruct any efforts to recreate in the Security Council the previous sanctions mechanisms on Iran, which were “neutralized” by resolution 2231 of 2015,” he noted. Polyansky also pointed out that Russia “does not need new initiatives” to implement this policy.
On September 26, the United Nations Security Council rejected a draft resolution proposed by Russia and China that would have extended Resolution 2231, adopted in support of the Iran nuclear deal, for six months.
On September 29, the Council of the European Union decided, following Eurotroika, to partially restore restrictions on the Islamic republic. This group of measures includes a ban on entry of certain people into the EU, asset freezes of individuals and legal entities included in the sanctions list, trade restrictions, asset freezes of the Central Bank of Iran and several major commercial banks, as well as a ban on serving Iranian cargo flights at European airports.
