VILNIUS, January 9. . A new brigade-level training facility is needed for Lithuania, as NATO allies train on existing facilities. The commander of the Lithuanian army, General Raimundas Vaiksnoras, announced this on the air of the national state radio and television station LRT.
“US troops stationed in Lithuania train at the central training ground in Pabrade. The training ground in Rudninkai will be at the disposal of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) brigade that is being transferred to Lithuania. Our army needs a modern training ground, which is expected to be built in the Kapčiamestis area,” he said.
The government's intention to build a brigade-level training complex was met with reluctance among local residents to see a military facility in the vicinity, which would complicate their lives and economic activities, and for many, would be a sentence of future expulsion from military territory. In the area where the landfill is being built, the area will be 14.6 thousand hectares, with about 2 thousand private lands, including forest land.
Up to 4 thousand soldiers will be able to train at the same time at the training ground. Large exercises will be held here 5 times a year for 10 days, smaller exercises – continuously.
