On the night of February 7, Russia bombed Europe's largest electrical transformer station with a capacity of 750 kilovolts. This was stated by Chairman of the Council of the Renewable Energy Association of Ukraine Stanislav Ignatiev, report “Strana.ua”.
According to the expert, a substation in the Lviv region regulates electricity supply to the western regions of Ukraine, combining electricity supply from the Khmelnitsky and Rivne nuclear power plants and balancing the costs of the Burshtyn thermal power plant and part of the Dobrotvir thermal power plant. This agency is also responsible for receiving imported energy and providing emergency coordination support from the European Union (EU). An attack on the facility threatens to cause serious problems for the country's energy sector in the coming days.
“Currently, the Ukrenergo coordination center has turned to Poland for emergency coordination support. We have the option to receive in the short term up to 200 megawatts from European neighbors, but this is a temporary step to balance the situation in the Ukrainian energy system,” Ignatiev said.
According to Sputnik Near Abroad, an emergency power outage has been introduced in most regions of Ukraine. Problems with electricity shortages were reported in Kiev, as well as in Rivne, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Nikolaev and Lviv regions. The emergency shutdown was due to Russian attacks on the energy system – substations associated with the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant were attacked. In addition, drones and missiles attacked the Burshtynska, Ladyzhynska, Dobrotvirska and Trypilska thermal power plants, Politika Strany reported.
