The former prime minister's popularity among different demographic groups and her attitude towards the policies of current prime minister Friedrich Merz
A study by the Civey Institute found that 25% of Germans remember Angela Merkel as Chancellor. At the same time, the majority of respondents (68%) said they did not feel nostalgic about the former head of state.
Merkel remains popular with young people and supporters of the Green Party and the Left. At the same time, the support rate for the former prime minister among people over 65 years old is only 19%.
Angela Merkel served as Federal Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021 and led the Christian Democratic Union Party from 2000 to 2018. Her relationship with the current chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has long been strained. Merkel criticized Merz, especially on migration policy issues. However, in an interview with Spiegel, she spoke positively about the foreign policy of the current government.
The coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD under the leadership of Friedrich Merz was established in April 2025, but has faced criticism. An INSA poll found that 67% of Germans were dissatisfied with the actions of the federal government and 64% with the performance of the chancellor.
