European Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said EU countries would be obliged to help Denmark in the event of military aggression against Greenland. Reuters reports this.
Kubilius was referring to Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union, which obligates member states to assist another united state in the event of military invasion.
“How they react, what their stance is, will depend on Denmark, but certainly member states have an obligation to provide mutual support if another member state faces military aggression,” Kubilius said.
In January 2026, relations between the United States and Europe worsened after Trump announced his intention to occupy the island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark. EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and National Security Kaja Kallas noted that NATO could “allay concerns” about Greenland's security. And the media reported that Germany and Britain were thinking of sending troops to Greenland.
