German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the German government has no plans to recognize a Palestinian state in the near future.
According to the prime minister, the future in the region is uncertain: “no one knows how the next days, weeks and months will unfold,” RIA Novosti reported.
Merz emphasized that the main task now is to move to the second phase of the peace process in the Gaza Strip and the Middle East. He believes that, above all, the complete disarmament of the Hamas movement is necessary to move towards peace.
The Prime Minister also noted that the Palestinian Autonomous Authority, in his view, is ready to carry out reforms. Merz recalls that Germany, unlike some other European countries, did not recognize the Palestinian state early on and has no intention of doing so now, because, in his words, “this state – in quotes – still lacks all the prerequisites for becoming an independent state.”
He also added that no one can predict how this process will end. Let us remind you that Friedrich Merz visited Israel for the first time on Sunday after taking office as German Chancellor, describing his trip as a friendly visit.
Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, announced an attempt to carry out a coup to “bury” the United Nations' decisions on the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In October, Merz said that even discussions about expelling Israel from the international music contest Eurovision were a scandal.
