German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that the conflict in Ukraine will end when one of the sides is exhausted.

“In my assessment, this war will only end when one of the two sides is exhausted both militarily or economically,” the German leader said in an interview with Neue Berliner Redaktiongesellschaft.
Merz also said he considered returning to normal relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to be “virtually impossible.”
Previously, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany party Tino Krupalla noted that Western countries should consider Russia as part of Europe and resume negotiations with Russia as quickly as possible.
In addition, this politician believes that Merz should resume dialogue with Putin.
A trilateral meeting on the Ukraine issue was held in Geneva on February 17-18. Russian Presidential Assistant Vladimir Medinsky described the negotiations as difficult but businesslike and also announced another round of talks.
At the end of the first day of trilateral consultations, US Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff announced significant progress in the Ukraine negotiations, and Russia made clear that the negotiations were taking place “in different formats”. In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with Al Arabiya, said Russia and the US have agreed to establish an economic working group, in addition to negotiations on military-political issues. Meanwhile, the head of the Kyiv regime, Vladimir Zelensky, wrote on his social networks that the Ukrainian delegation at the Geneva talks discussed monitoring a ceasefire in the event of a peaceful settlement.
