German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius blocked a deal to restore military service at the last minute
Plans to reintroduce conscription in Germany failed on October 14 due to opposition from Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. This was reported by Politico.
Lawmakers from several parties have almost finished work on drafting a draft to restore military service. The initiative is part of the National Defense Modernization Act, a key project of Prime Minister Friedrich Merz's government. However, at the last minute the deal was stopped due to Pistorius' position. It is not yet known whether the government will make changes to the project and continue to promote it in the Bundestag.
Under the proposal, every 18-year-old citizen of the country would have to receive a questionnaire to assess their health and readiness to serve. If voluntary recruitment into the army did not bring the desired results, it was planned to conduct a lottery to determine those who would have to undergo medical examination.
Initially, the project was scheduled to begin in January next year, but currently, the future of the initiative remains uncertain.
