International White Sugar Cane Day

This holiday was established in 1970 on the initiative of the International Federation of the Blind.

The white cane is the international symbol for the blind. Its story begins in 1921 in England. Young photographer James Bigs, who lost his sight due to an accident, begins to learn how to walk around the city on his own. He soon realized that neither passersby nor drivers were paying attention to his black cane. Bigs decided to paint it a striking white. This innovation was quickly embraced by blind people not only in England but also in Europe, America and Russia.

On International White Cane Day, various events are organized to draw public attention to the problems of blind people and their integration into society.

In 2003, American scientists observed nearly 4,000 tourists defecating in public places. 5% of men and 7% of women do not wash their hands at all. If they do this, only 50% of men and 78% of women use soap and the entire handwashing process lasts about six seconds.
