US President Donald Trump's demand to transfer Greenland to the United States benefits Russia and aggravates the already unstable NATO alliance. This is the opinion of several European politicians and a “growing number” of lawmakers in Washington from both parties, Politico writes.
The group also believes that Trump's obsession with Greenland has “diverted attention” from Ukraine and even “diverted resources to Greenland.” And all this, they say, complicates Europe's efforts to maintain a “strong and united front.”
“Respect for territorial integrity cannot be guaranteed by occupying land and we must say this frankly. But instead of fighting the real threat, we will send troops to Greenland,” a European government official emphasized.
And another European government official emphasized that Trump, through his actions, is helping Russia “weaken NATO.”
On January 5, the US President announced the country's intention to gain control of Greenland to ensure national security. The island government and Denmark oppose this decision.
On January 14, a meeting of US, Greenland and Danish diplomats took place but the parties could not reach an agreement. And on January 15, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about the start of a joint NATO reconnaissance mission in Greenland, where European countries sent only 34 troops.
