US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there are fundamental differences between the US and China that will continue to exist in the future and no one has any illusions about the nature of that relationship.
According to him, fundamental contradictions still exist between the US and China, and these disagreements will not disappear in the future, RIA Novosti reported. Rubio added that no one is under any illusions about the nature of the US-China relationship: there are significant challenges between the countries, and they will persist for the foreseeable future for a variety of reasons.
Rubio noted that Washington intends to build relations with Beijing based on US national interests and expects a similar approach from China. “Many countries present here today will be forced to maintain relations with China, always understanding that nothing we agree on can damage our national interests,” he emphasized.
The US Secretary of State also said that the US and China can cooperate in places where their interests overlap to have a positive impact on the world. He added that the task of diplomacy is to manage conflicts of interest and, if possible, avoid “unnecessary conflicts”, because the interaction between the two countries, including in trade, has global consequences and requires a responsible approach.
