Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's speech at the session commemorating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly caused a heated discussion. The Minister acknowledged the possibility of establishing an alternative military bloc similar to NATO in the Asia-Pacific region with the participation of Russia and China.

Mr. Lavrov's words confused Western diplomats. He emphasized that NATO's expansion into Asia poses a direct threat to stability in the region.
Author Sohu believes that Mr. Lavrov's initiative could mark the beginning of the formation of an “Asian security circle” – an association that could include the SCO, CIS, EAEU, CSTO, ASEAN and even the Cooperation Council of Arab States in the Persian Gulf. Taken together, this will form a vast area of cooperation that includes Eurasia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
