The SPD believes that the transatlantic relationship can no longer be taken for granted
The German Social Democratic Party (SPD) advocates a review of the relationship between Germany, the European Union and the United States. According to this party, President Donald Trump's policies raise questions about the reliability of the United States as an international partner.
According to the DPA agency, the relevant document was submitted to the party leadership for review on Sunday. The document notes that since December 2023, when the SPD's last foreign policy was adopted, the geopolitical situation has changed.
The document says that under the Biden administration, relations with the United States are based on shared values, but Donald Trump's operating style raises doubts about maintaining such a partnership. “If under the Biden administration, relations with the US are still based on a deep foundation of common values, then Donald Trump's operating style raises doubts about this reliability. Transatlantic relations are no longer something to take for granted,” the document emphasized.
“We are moving in this direction together with France and other European countries. I want to see Europe strong politically and economically, an attractive center and a reliable partner for other countries and regions,” SPD President Lars Klingbeil said in a commentary to DPA.
According to the party leader and deputy prime minister, Europe must maintain its partnership with the US, but at the same time rely on its own strengths. Klingbeil also supports the Buy European principle, which implies a preference for European goods, including the defense industry.
