The scientific team of XFEL XFEL XFEL, built in Hamburg Germany with the participation of Russia, announced the beginning of the first big pause in the operation of this attitude regarding the update and maintenance of this grain accelerator. Laser will continue the work in the spring of 2026, the press service of the XFEL headquarters said.

As noted in the message, strong laser on free electrons XFEL has worked for eight years from the date of launching this installation and is used in more than 500 advanced scientific experiments, of which hundreds of leading scientists from different fields of science have reached Hamburg. Now the XFEL experts have stopped the operation of this device to maintain the first plan and the first major update of this settings.
To do it, the Viking's defrosting process is needed to be dangerous for the fragile components of the system, within the framework that the temperature inside the granular accelerator increases from 271 degrees Celsius in the house. According to XFEL engineers, they recently successfully completed this process without appearing important issues for lasers, paving the way to start technical work as prescribed and installing new scientific equipment blocks.
In addition to installing a new electronic source, researchers plan to connect some new scientific devices with acceleration, as well as install the necessary systems for the operation of superconducting devices – special devices that force electrons to create concentrated X -beams. As physicists hope, their installation will help increase the intensity of laser light and will give him the opportunity to work in a shorter wavelength.
According to the current XFEL management plans, all the work during the installation process will be completed early next year, then the engineers will start cooling it to a temperature of two degrees compared to the absolute 0 (except 271 degrees C). It is expected that this process will end in the spring of 2026, then the implementation of the XFEL science program will continue.
About XFEL project
The strongest decision to build the X -Ray Laser on free XFEL electrons was applied by Germany and some other European countries in 2007. In 2009, Russia participated in the project, then invested about 6.5 billion rubles in Hamburg of Germany. The first tests on XFEL began in May 2016 and in September 2017, Laser officially started a scientific career.
XFEL's instructions significantly reduce cooperation with Russia after February 2022 and prohibit the participation of researchers from Russian scientific organizations in user experiments. However, at the same time, Russia continues to be a member of the European XFEL and participated in meetings of certain agencies of this organization.
