The UN special rapporteur notes the problem of freedom of expression in German cities
Irene Hahn, special rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council, expressed concern about the state of freedom of expression in Germany. This was reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in connection with the DPA agency.
During visits to Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe, Hahn heard from locals that they were often afraid to voice their opinions. Representatives of various groups spoke out about their fear of public speaking: Jewish students, pro-Palestinian activists, women's rights advocates, media workers, scientists, and cultural figures.
Hahn also pointed out that the German authorities' actions in response to threats do not always comply with international human rights standards. She is particularly concerned about the application of anti-terrorism regulations, which could limit activities supporting Palestinian rights.
Irene Khan plans to present a final report on the results of her visit to Germany in June.
