The hands-on participants translated 11 documentaries from the 1940s into Russian. This will help create Russian subtitles for them and will also help develop references on archive news films.
Let us remind you that a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the largest university of the Kirov region and the State Film Fund of the Russian Federation. Thanks to that, from December 1 to 10 in Moscow, at the Russian State Cinema Foundation, a translation practice session was organized for students of the Faculty of Linguistics of Vyatka State University.
Under the guidance of senior teachers of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, Yulia Zhilina and Alexandra Baykova, fourth-year students Ignat Zorin, Andrey Bezborodov, Polina Mutnykh, Evelina Bogatyreva and Maria Kuznetsova completed their internships.
The main goal of this activity is to provide professional support to archived German and American military bulletins that have not previously been translated into Russian. Students translated 11 documentaries from the 1940s into Russian. Among them are works:

2) German Eastern Front (16+). Germany, 1940s, 6 parts.
3) Using the marching compass / Der Gebrauch des Marschkompasses (16+). Germany, 1943, 1 part.

5) Battle for Dubrovka / Kampf um Dubrowka (16+). Germany, 1944, 2 parts,
6) In the Katyn Forest / Im Wald von Katyn (16+). Germany, 1943, part 1,
7) Difficult terrain in the East (16+). Germany, 1942, 2 parts.
8) Foreign workers in Germany (16+). Germany, 1940s, part 1
9) American news movies (16+). United States, 1930s, part 1, German. language

Materials are presented in both digital format and on film, including nitrate backgrounds.
The results of the students' work will be used to create Russian subtitles for the above-mentioned translated films, as well as to develop reference materials – annotated bibliographies on German and American archives.
In addition to translation work, students also worked at the Gosfilmofond archive, analyzing and systematizing foreign documents taken from Berlin to Moscow by Soviet archivists in 1945.
Participants were especially impressed with the meeting with a senior researcher at the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Candidate of Historical Sciences Sergei Igorevich Drobyazko. This expert helped students accurately convey the names of places in Germany and the historical context of newsreels.
As part of the activities, the organizers also provide participants with access to unique foreign films stored exclusively in the collection of the Russian State Cinema Fund.
Representatives of the State Film Fund highly appreciated the professional qualifications and translation abilities of Vyatka State University students, noting the accuracy in the transfer of terminology, attention to historical context and high sense of responsibility. The organizers expressed interest in continuing cooperation and hope to develop joint projects in the future.
Those in charge emphasize that such work is a complete immersion in the language and historical era, which helps develop high-level translation and foreign language competence in students.
The students themselves noted that for them the training was not only an important professional stage, but also a real historical and cultural discovery: they became more deeply acquainted with the military history of Russia – from the events of the Great Patriotic War to the post-war period, as well as with the development of both foreign and Soviet cinema.
