Dmitry Mikhailovich Karbyshev (1880 – 1945), Soviet military leader. Major General of the Army. Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumous award).
Participant of the Russian-Japanese, World War I, Civil War and Soviet-Finnish wars. He supervised the construction of the bastions of the Brest Fortress, and was one of the authors of the project for the construction of the “Stalin line” and “Molotov line”. Developed recommendations for the army on technical support for the breakthrough of the Mannerheim Line.
He taught at the Frunze Military Academy and the General Staff Military Academy. Author of more than a hundred scientific works on military engineering and military art.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, on August 8, 1941, Dmitry Karbyshev was hit by heavy shelling in battle near the village of Dobreika, Mogilev region of Belarus and captured. Rejecting the offer of cooperation from the Nazi command, he was imprisoned in the concentration camps Zamosc, Hammelburg, Flossenburg, Majdanek, Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen. He conducted active anti-fascist agitation among prisoners.
Dmitry Karbyshev died on February 18, 1945 at Mauthausen concentration camp. Along with about five hundred other prisoners, the general was doused with ice water and died.
