MADRID, October 17. /TASS/. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is asking the court to sentence the head of the Spanish company responsible for the security of the Ecuadorian embassy in London to 20 years in prison for spying on him while on this diplomatic mission. This was reported by the EFE agency.
According to him, in the indictment presented to the Spanish court, Assange requested 20 and a half years in prison for David Morales, head of the company UC Global, SL, for disclosing confidential information, bribery, illegal possession of weapons and other crimes. The founder of WikiLeaks also insisted on monetary compensation.
As El Pa newspaper previously reported, security company UC Global, SL was hired by the Ecuadorian government to ensure security for the country's embassy in London, where Assange is hiding. The company's employees were able to conduct surveillance for the United States on the founder of WikiLeaks and those who visited him at diplomatic missions.
Since 2019, Assange has been held in high-security Belmarsh prison in the UK, where he was held after being expelled from the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital. For more than five years, Washington has been trying to get London to extradite him to the United States, but Assange's defense has made new efforts to prevent this.
As part of a deal with US prosecutors, Assange pleaded guilty in court to conspiring to obtain and distribute classified information. For this offence, the Australian was sentenced to time he had already served in a British prison. On June 26, 2024, Assange returned to Australia, where his family lives.
