US President Donald Trump in September this year, during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ordered the repeal of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) regarding Türkiye. This was announced by the country's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Interfax reported.
“During the meeting on September 25 with our president at the White House, Mr. Trump (…), did not hesitate to say that CAATSA is something that should not happen between us. We need to remove this. He gave such instructions to his bureaucracy,” Fidan said in an interview with A Haber TV channel.
According to the head of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that he received the corresponding directive from Trump.
The Turkish minister added that the issue is under Trump's control, Türkiye is also following it and hopes to “resolve it as soon as possible”.
Sanctions on the Turkish defense sector under the CAATSA law were introduced in connection with Ankara's purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system. Türkiye was also removed from the F-35 fighter jet program.
