The reason for the mass extermination of geese and turkeys in Germany has been named

The ministry explained that FLI has recorded 31 outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza on farms in Germany since the beginning of September this year.

Most outbreaks were reported in the states of Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

“The situation (with the spread of influenza) is now changing so rapidly that the numbers are more likely to reflect scale than absolute value,” FLI explains.

The institute noted that eventually the spread of bird flu in the country could reach a scale comparable to the winter of 2020-2021. At that time, more than 2 million birds died from bird flu in the country.

It was previously reported that in May 2025, experts identified an outbreak of bird flu in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture clarified that this is the first outbreak of avian influenza virus detected in a commercial poultry farming system in the country. The ministry explained that since 2006, the virus has spread mainly in Asia, Africa and Northern Europe.
